AI News for Sellers: Google's New #1 Model Is Locked Away (Oct 31, 2026)

Gemini 4 Carbon tops a major AI ranking but almost nobody can use it, ChatGPT now reads iCloud email, and New York tells chatbots to stop posing as humans with kids.

The smartest AI model in the world, by one well-watched scoreboard, is one you can't use. Google's Gemini 4 Carbon just took first place on a major independent ranking, and as far as anyone can tell, almost nobody outside Google can open it. I'll take that as today's lesson before we even start: the leaderboard is not your toolbox.

Also on today's list: ChatGPT can now read and send email from your customers' iCloud accounts, New York just told chatbots to stop pretending to be people when they talk to kids, and a famous chatbot company is being sold off in bankruptcy court. Let's go.

Google's new number one is locked in a back room

On October 28, Artificial Analysis, an independent group that scores AI models on a mix of hard tests, put Gemini 4 Carbon (High) at 59 on its Intelligence Index. That's the top score on the board, one point ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at its highest setting. It also runs fast, around 100 tokens a second by their measurement.

Two details the headlines skip. First, the lead is tiny. On the same group's coding-agent ranking, Carbon sits a few points behind, not ahead. Second, reports say Google has opened it only to a small group of cyber-security defenders, with no date for everyone else. I couldn't find a Google page confirming the wider plan, so treat the timing as unknown.

Why it matters for sellers: it mostly doesn't, yet, and that's the point. Every few weeks a new model is "number one" by a point or two. The model that answers your customer at 2 a.m. is the one that is actually available, priced sensibly and set up with your products, prices and rules. If you followed our note on Gemini 4 Argon opening up earlier this month, you've seen how fast "the best" changes hands. Pick tools for the job they do in your shop, not for this week's chart.

ChatGPT can now read your customer's iCloud inbox

On October 27, OpenAI added iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar connectors to ChatGPT, on every plan, free included, on web, desktop and iPhone. Once someone connects their account, ChatGPT can search and read their emails, manage drafts, send messages, look up contacts, and read or create calendar events. Setup uses an Apple app-specific password, and mail and calendar are connected separately.

This sounds like a feature for busy professionals. Look at it from the shop side instead. A huge share of shoppers use iPhones, and your order confirmations, shipping notices and invoices land in exactly those inboxes. Soon your customer won't open your email at all. They'll ask, "When does my coat arrive?" and an assistant will read your message and answer for you.

What to do about it:

  • Put the facts in plain text. Order number, item, price, delivery date, return window. If it only lives inside an image banner, an assistant may miss it.
  • One email, one job. A shipping notice stuffed with three promotions is harder for a person and a machine to summarize correctly.
  • Use it yourself. If your supplier invoices and courier updates pile up in iCloud, this is a free way to ask "which orders haven't shipped yet?" Just remember that a connected inbox is a door. One report notes that disconnecting doesn't erase what's already been pulled into past chats, so connect the account you'd be comfortable sharing.

New York tells chatbots: don't pretend to be human with kids

On October 28, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law that lists twelve "unsafe" AI companion features that companies can't offer to anyone under 18, or to anyone whose age they haven't confirmed. Among them: a chatbot claiming to be a human, encouraging self-harm, or holding sexual conversations with minors. The state attorney general can take violators to court, and the rules start on January 1.

This law is aimed at companion apps, the "AI friend" kind, not at a shop's order bot. Still, I'd read it as a preview. The line regulators keep drawing, state after state, is the same: a bot must not lie about being a bot.

Why it matters for sellers: you don't need a law to make this your rule. Customers forgive "I'm the shop's assistant, let me get you an answer." They don't forgive finding out the friendly "Sara" who promised a discount was software. Say what it is, keep it honest, and decide in advance when the AI should hand the conversation to a human, especially for complaints, refunds and anything that sounds like a younger customer.

Quick takes

  • Character.AI is up for sale in bankruptcy court. The company behind the popular character chatbot app filed for Chapter 11 in mid-October, and Disney has offered $20 million for selected assets, including intellectual property, as the opening bid. The app still runs, but what happens to millions of users' chats depends on the buyer, with a sale expected around late November or early December. The lesson for anyone running a business on an AI tool: ask today whether you can export your conversations and customer data, and what happens to them if the company disappears. It's one of the questions in our guide to choosing an AI DM assistant without buying the wrong one.
  • Gemini's new Customize page reaches everyone. Google has been rolling out a single hub in Gemini, on web, phone and the Windows and Mac apps, that holds saved "Skills" (repeatable instructions, like writing in your voice) and connectors to more than 40 services, including Shopify, Dropbox and GitHub. The rollout began October 13 and was set to take up to 15 days, so it should be landing now. If you write product captions in Gemini, save your brand voice as a Skill once instead of pasting it every time.

The thread running through today

Every story today is about the same thing: who is actually doing the talking. A model you can't touch tops the charts. An assistant reads your emails to your customer. A law says the bot must admit it's a bot. A company folds and takes its users' conversations into a courtroom. The sellers who come out ahead aren't the ones chasing the newest model. They're the ones who know exactly what's answering their customers, what it's allowed to say, and where that data lives.

That's the job we built Vardast for: an AI assistant that answers your customers on Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram and your website with your real products and prices, tells customers plainly what it is, and passes the tricky conversations to you. See you in the next digest.

Questions about this week's AI news

Can I use Gemini 4 Carbon yet?

Not as of October 31, 2026. Reports say Google has made it available only to a small group of cyber-security defenders, and no public release date has been announced. Gemini 4 Argon is the version that is generally available.

How do I connect iCloud Mail to ChatGPT?

Open ChatGPT settings and connect iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar separately. You need an Apple app-specific password, not your normal Apple Account password. The connectors work on all ChatGPT plans, including free, on web, desktop and iOS.

Does New York's new chatbot law apply to shop customer-service bots?

The law signed on October 28, 2026 targets AI companion features offered to minors, such as a chatbot claiming to be human. It is not written for order or support bots, but being clear that your assistant is an AI is still the safest practice, and the rules take effect on January 1.

What happens to Character.AI after its bankruptcy?

Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 in October 2026 and is being sold through a court process, with Disney's $20 million offer for selected assets as the opening bid. The app keeps running for now, and the sale is expected to finish around late November or early December.
